Ladakh, the union territory of India is located in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent in the vicinity of the Karakoram and westernmost Himalayan mountain ranges, fondly called as the ‘Roof of India’. Surrounded by high mountains, Ladakh falls in the rain shadow region making it a high altitude cold desert and one of the most remote and sparsely populated regions of India. It is surrounded by Jammu and Kashmir to the west and by Himachal Pradesh to the south.

This a common confusion amongst many of us! The region is called Ladakh whereas the town of Leh is the joint administrative capital of Ladakh. Ladakh has two districts - Kargil and Leh with a total population of approximately 3 lakhs. Leh is at an altitude of 3,524 metres (11,562 ft.) and is connected via National Highway No. 1 to Srinagar in the southwest and to Manali in the south via the Leh-Manali Highway.

Ladakh is considered to be an earthly paradise due to its ultimate beauty and charm! Cities in Ladakh are some of the most visited tourist attractions, as they stand out in their unique way, epitomizing exquisiteness. Tourists are awestruck by the beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, panoramic landscapes, starry skies, unique monasteries and palaces unlike any other place in India or around the world!

Yes, it is very safe to travel to Ladakh. Ladakh became a Union Territory of India on 31 October 2019. The locals here are quite friendly, polite and hospitable. Buddhism is being practised for ages making it a very peaceful and calm region. Tourists are most welcome in Ladakh.

The culture of Ladakh is quite similar to that of Tibet. In Ladakh, the cuisines are mostly of Tibetan origin - Thupka, Tsampo etc . The architecture of Ladakh is also influenced by Tibetan style and has references to the existence of dragons. The religion there has both Tibetan and Buddhist influences and most of the chants are in Sanskrit and Tibetan.

Ladakh is the highest plateau in India. Most of Ladakh is at an altitude above 3000 meters. Cold desert type climate prevails throughout the year. One of the important travel tips to bear in mind is that there is cold wind throughout the day and night in this region. In Leh at 3,500 metres altitude, the average temperature can rise to 22°C in the day during summer and dip to as low as -15°C in the night during winter.

The oxygen level at the height of 3000 meters is lower than other low altitude regions. Therefore, it is very important to devote time to acclimatize to the altitude before starting to tour the region. It is considered best practice to spend the first day of your trip at Leh just to relax and acclimatize to high altitude weather conditions.

Acclimatize means to adapt to a new temperature, altitude, climate or environment. It takes around 24 hrs to acclimatize there. All Indian Paradise Ladakh tours are designed in such a way that our guests get enough time to acclimatize in Leh.

Acute mountain Sickness (AMS) is a kind of Altitude sickness that is caused by reduced air pressure and lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. If you get to a high altitude too quickly, your body may not be able to adapt immediately to the lack of oxygen thereby causing AMS. Some people acclimatize quickly whereas others acclimatize slowly. There is no significant correlation between age / gender / physical fitness and AMS; even Olympic athletes may suffer from AMS.

We have a few recommendations to prevent acute mountain sickness: • Day one of the tour should be kept free for acclimatization • As you reach there simply lie down and rest • Avoid strenuous physical activities • While moving around, walk slowly • Stay well hydrated and eat small meals • Acclimatization is often accompanied by fluid loss so one should drink plenty of water • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol • Protect yourself from the cold and the sun
